Dr. Arun Gopi Leads Metromed to Historic Milestone with World’s Smallest Retrievable Leadless Pacemaker

Metromed International Cardiac Centre (MICC) in Calicut, India, has announced a significant achievement in cardiac care, successfully performing the implant procedure for the world’s smallest retrievable dual-chamber leadless pacemaker. This breakthrough marks a new era for patients needing long-term pacing support, offering a safer and less restrictive alternative to traditional pacemakers.

What Makes This Pacemaker Revolutionary?

The device used, an ultra-advanced capsule pacemaker like the AVEIR system, represents a major leap forward in medical technology.

  • Leadless and Minimally Invasive: Unlike conventional pacemakers that require a surgical incision in the chest and thin wires (leads) connected to the heart, this device is about the size of a vitamin capsule. It is guided directly into the heart through a vein in the groin using a catheter, leaving no chest scar or “pacemaker bump.”
  • Retrievable Design: A key innovation is the device’s ability to be safely retrieved or replaced if needed. This eliminates long-term complications associated with leads, such as infection, wire fracture, or the need for complex extraction procedures decades later.
  • Dual-Chamber Functionality: The system is designed to provide dual-chamber pacing, which is required by the majority of patients. It can be initially implanted as a single chamber and later upgraded wirelessly to a dual-chamber system, ensuring flexibility for the patient’s future health needs.

Leading the Way in Cardiac Care

The pioneering procedure was performed under the expert supervision of Dr. Arun Gopi, Director of the Cath lab and a renowned international electrophysiologist at MICC.

This successful implantation places Metromed International Cardiac Centre at the forefront of innovative cardiac care in the region, bringing world-class, ultra-advanced treatment options to patients in South India. For those with bradycardia (a slow heart rhythm), this leadless technology promises a quicker recovery, fewer complications, and a significantly improved quality of life.
